How would the software benefit me, is it really worth the cost?Īnisha: The main reason I started using CAD software, was that I was just wasting a lot of time trying to model things in cardboard that would then require incremental changes, and you’d almost have to rebuild the whole thing because it’s so structural. Move 3D Object in Vectorworks is an absolute revelation! It felt like I was moving things and they moved to the wrong place, or lines weren’t quite joining up properly which I’m sure is probably practise and getting familiar with the programme. I’m so used to being precise when moving objects around because thats how AutoCAD works, but on SketchUp I found it difficult to be as precise. I’d only done AutoCAD 2D before and suddenly I was in this world where you can fly around and it takes some getting used to! I’m still very much at the beginning of this journey. Winner.Īnisha: I found having flitted between the two whilst we were doing the course, that half the battle was getting used to 3D modelling. It also does some BRILLIANT maths for you. I found it took longer to get used to seeing every thing on the screen but now I know it, I found that I could solve any drawing problems in a much more logical way (the answer is nearly always in the object info palette). It has the 2D capability of AutoCAD but the 3D modelling fun of SketchUp. Vectorworks has a lot of elements that are super useful but it is a slightly bigger beast. I’m really glad I had used it for a while before I opted for a more expensive CAD package because I found the transition to Vectorworks relatively easy having gotten used to a 3D platform. I think it’s a really powerful software and a great place to start 3D modelling. You can be quite comfortable modelling in it quite quickly. Katie: I found SketchUp incredibly user friendly. I came on board as a relative newbie to the software to help run the Sunday sessions and to also learn! What did you hope to get from the Vectorworks training? I wanted to continue my Vectorworks journey whilst in lockdown and I had some hours set aside in my DYCP funding to complete some more training. What other software do you like to use? A good old pen and paper! Though I recently got a hold of Rhino too. Having done the training I can see that it also offers potential to assist throughout the design process. I also wanted to add to my skills as an assistant and associate designer. I’ve been exploring SketchUp too with this purpose in mind, and this training offered the opportunity to see the potential of another software too. What did you hope to get from the Vectorworks training? Initially – the ability to sketch model more efficiently and sustainably through the use of 3D digital modelling. Viewport Improvements - We've improved camera predictability for viewports by setting the Pan tool as the default tool when activating the Edit 3D View and fine-tuning the "Preserve scale on resize" option. What other software you like to use? AutoCAD, Photoshop.Per-page Sequence Autotext - Sequenced auto-text can now be either per page or per document.Tag Visibility Improvements - We've added the ability to discreetly override styles across multiple viewports, separating line styles from other styles.Custom Rotation Start Angle - Define a custom start angle for rotating selected entities.dwg files as references, just like with SketchUp files. DWG References - You can now manage inserted.Various Modelling updates and improvements including new Select options, freehand tool updates, and improvements to the Axes tool. The new Overlays panel can help you manage extensions designed with this capability. Overlays - Developers can now create extensions that can persist while using other native SketchUp tools and functions.Large Model Saving Efficiency - Save big models with improved efficiency using multithreading technology.Flip Tool - The new Flip tool makes it simpler to invert selections and create symmetry, replacing SketchUp's Flip Along commands.Revit Importer - Speaking of Studio, Studio subscribers can now easily import Revit files into their SketchUp models.Windows Common Installer - A new installation experience with more options, including Studio features.Scanned and emailed to New in SketchUp 2023?
